Biosolids are sewage sludges that have been treated and stabilised to the extent that they are able to be safely and beneficially applied to land. They contain a variety of micro-nutrients essential for plant growth, including nitrogen and phosphorus, and metals e.g., calcium, magnesium, potassium. They also contain organic matter, which aids soils structure and microbial health.
If taken up in excessive amounts, some of the elements above can cause damage to plant or animal health. In addition, biosolids can contain pathogenic micro-organisms, e.g., bacteria, viruses, helminths, protozoa and fungi) depending on the degree of treatment they have received. For this reason, adequate monitoring needs to be in place to assess these.
